Making a FIFO canned food storage auto-rotating shelving rack.

Yesterday I made a shelf for some canned food. I have been eyeballing the soda in the beverage gliders at the local convenience store. After talking to the manager a few times, he said he would see if he could get some for me. Yesterday, we stopped in, and SCORE! He had half a dozen.

So, I started making the canned goods slider.

I started with an old piece of plexi I had left over from my college days. It used to be the top to a home-made desk. I used it because it’s nice and thick.

Trying to fit the shelves into the space that works well with the size of the plexi

Here I am trying to figure out what angle they need to be to work correctly.

initial testing the food shelf roller rack
The first try was a failure

I tried it out. Dismal failure. Not only did the tape let go – silly me for using painters tape, but the angles and heights where all wrong.

Here I have it set up with the right angles and heights. There needs to be a good angle with plenty of distance between the two so you an slip the can in back, and be able to pull it out up front.

riveted the parts together
See the rivet sticking out? The plastic riveted together well.

I riveted the whole thing together. The rivets have a nice, smooth head that doesn’t stick out very far. Bolts, screws, etc. would have given me fits to go through the sides like this. I would have needed to bolt up hardware on the bottom.

One side riveted on. The other side will keep the cans from wanting to fall out.

One side done! Lots of rivets. You see that it holds the cans up, but without the other side, it wants to tip out.

marking drill lines so the holes line up well
Neatness counts

Marking out the drill holes for the other side. It doesn’t need to be perfect, but lining up all the holes makes it look better.

Finished home made canned good rotation shelf
Load it in back, pull from the front. Sweetness!

Here it is all done. I zip-tied it to my metal shelf that hold the rest of my canned food.

I really like whole thing. It cleared up a lot of space on my shelving. It allows me to automatically rotate my canned food so it doesn’t expire before I get to eating it.

Mom, I have an announcement to make. You have 2 new grand-kittiess!

I ended up with 2 kittens yesterday. I came home, and they attacked. Actually, they were sleeping in one of my moving boxes and I had to look for them for a while before I woke one up.
Katie found this brother and sister through work. A gal had asked her to feed them for the night, and then tried to give them to her… successfully. Katie SMSed me, asking if I wanted them, because I had half-jokenly said I wanted a mean old barn cat called One-eyed-Jack (even if he had both eyes) to keep the critters out of my apartment. She offered to clean the litter box, I said SOLD!

Now, what to name them? The male is the orange one, and the female is the darker one. She has 6 toes on each foot in front. My first choices are Deeohgie and Ceaytie, but Katie vetoed them immediatly like they where her cats. She insists that they are mine, but the female a little less so. My Second Choise was to call them the Kellers, Roche and Ratte, but again, shot down. For now they are called dip-shit and shit-head.

So, I am opening up a kitty naming contest. The winner gets… a gracious thank you on my blog and maybe a Christmas card from their namelings.

I have to finish unpacking and kitten proofing the place. They are going to tear my stuff up! Oh well. It will be fun!

Arrival

Well, I am here. It took long enough. I started yesterday at 8:30am by getting the truck serviced. why is it that it went in fine and came out with a power window not working?

It was raining from tropical whatever-it-was daryl. I started boxing stuff. Lunch, and then I started getting serious. A long story short, at 10:30 I had most everything outside and finally accepted that it wasn’t all going to fit. A trip to walmart to get one of those trailer hitch luggage racks was an excersize in futility. They had the rack, but not the reciever bar to make it work on my 1.25 inch reciever. Plan B – the biggest tub they have strapped to the roof. It worked. At 3am I was loaded. I pulled into my place at 7.

Now I am unloading.

I best get back to it.

Playstation 3

See these peeps. They are all waiting in line for a Playstation 3. I stopped in yesterday for a few minutes over lunch yesterday with Chris from work.

I was watching Chris play the basketball game. I wasn’t really all that impressed. Don’t get me wrong, the way the fans where handled is the best I have seen, but their feet would slip 3 inches to the left when the got the ball. They can catch a ball with the back of their hands, and Chris can’t play worth a hoot.

A guy walked up and asked if we where going to buy one. Uhm, No. He said he has been waiting in line for 3 days.

3 days. Say what? Between the price and taking 3 days off of work, that would be more the 2 weeks pay! I don’t think so! Posted by Picasa
