Cleaning up a WordPress Defacement

A long time ago, this site got hacked. Not 100% sure how it was done, either by wordpress exploit on this site, or a joomla exploit on another site on the same shared host. It took a bit of doing, but we finally got it killed. But the hack embeded links on about half my blog post pages. I wasn’t keen on manually editing about a thousand pages, so I just let them sit.

I finally figured out how to clean these links out!

/(<a style="text\-decoration: none;" href="\/index.php\?u=)((\w+)(-?))+">\.<\/a>/</a>

I found a WordPress plugin that allows me to run a regular expression find/replace. The one I used is “Search/Replace” which was fairly highly scored with a good amount of traffic. I am sure there are others that would work.

What this allows me to do is to write a regex to find the particular defacement – in this case a link at the end of a post, and remove it. Across all my posts. I ran it 10 at a time a few times just to make sure it wasn’t going to eat all my posts. And as always when doing bulk updates, backup the site first!

Playing with Stereoscopic images again – Correcting side-by-side display.

Fiddling around with my 3d photos again… This time I wanted to ‘correct’ the images so they display right for cross-eyed viewing.

Files saved in the .jps format are store in left than right order.

In order to look at images cross-eyed without inducing instant headaches, they need be in right photo than left photo order (swapped).

So, I am playing with HTML5 Canvas again to see if I can re-work the image so it’s correct for display on my blog.

What I am doing here is grabbing only half the image frame initially. When you click on it, it will re-display the image with the two halves swapped. I am also adding helper-dots for good measure.

Most people who know me know that I am pretty a-political. I am a live & let live type of person.

My theory is that politicians created all the good laws that needed creating years ago, and in order to stay relevant and appear to be working, now create really dumb laws. All so they can appear to be working and justify our voting for them again.

Basically it’s like taking somebody’s name out of the phone book because somebody made a BBB complaint against them. A really dumb idea, and trivial to work around.

Essentially, they are wanting to break the INTERNET in order to censor Americans without due process.

We have a process that deals with the problem they are trying to solve. It’s called Copyright litigation. It’s a poor process, slow, expensive, and difficult, but it’s a hell of a lot better than breaking the INTERNET!

I know from experience that it’s not often wise to come up with a technical ‘solution’ to a social management problem.

So, my act of defiance against this dumbness is to join the SOPA blackout.

I am not completely shutting down my site. That would be as dumb of an idea as SOPA is itself. So I am just using a splash screen and changed my template to a black template.

If it’s post-SOPA-blackout, you can see the SOPA unWELCOME screen at

1000 posts!

A big milestone, that’s for sure, 1000 posts. Granted, this is cheating a little, as it’s counting the twitter summaries as posts, but still…. 1000 posts! I only have 6 ‘drafts’ that are partially completed, so this post could have come a bit sooner.

I’ve been blogging for over 5 years now.
I still have that same computer from way back when (it’s now sitting on top of the fridge in the kitchen – best place ever for a computer). Google Pack has recently been sunsetted. I still use Picasa, but how I get photos into it is totally different, between an eye-fi card and my android phones syncing to it automatically.

I am no longer using blogger, but wordpress now. I’ve written my own wordpress plugin.

With so much changing, so much is still the same. I am still making my own aquarium gear – granted with a bit more to it now with the aquaponics aspect.

1000 posts! Crazy!

What would you want to see me blog about more? Less?.
