Turns out that my bathroom drain is leaking into the water heater, which is then leaking. I think the water filled up the insulated outer shell until it's coming out around some little relieve valve.
My wife found the leaky drain. YAY her!
I wrapped the leak in some self vulcanizing rubber tape. Hopefully this fixes the leak for a while.
I expect that the water around the outside of the water heater will shorten it's life significantly. When the heater gets replaced, I hope that the drain pipe gets fixed proper at the same time.
In poking around on the water heater last night, It appears I had managed to turn it off.
I found out this morning when I jumped into the shower. Cold showers suck!
I got it turned back on now… and didn't even blow anything up!
