Working on some cell phone holders for the cars

My wife's is a magnetic stand. I am building in wireless charging and NFC. Just place the phone in the stand, and the apps she wants will turn on automatically and it will do what she wants. Trying to make it really easy to use.

Mine won't be magnetic, but will function as a dash cam.

It is working. The mount holds the phone. A wire loop holds the phone from falling and the magnetic top holds it in the stand.

The magnetic base probably can’t hold the phone up from the end and not the center – the moment would be too great. Hoping this works.

This is a prototype for my next phone stand. THis one is not magnetic, but holds the phone in portrait mode so I can use it for a dash-cam. The phone sits in the two upper big clips. This helped me work out where on the dash I want the phone to sit and how far from the windshield.

Not sure how many times a Make magazine gets used for making stuff… literally.

Parts. Parts and supplies. I love parts and supplies. Wire and Tape and wireless chargers and stuff…

I used a drill press and a nibbler to cut this shoddy hole in the metal plate.

A Qi wireless charger is part of the hanger. This makes the stand even cooler. Just place the phone on the base, and it charges. Also, on the top, you can see an NFC tag.

Here you can see the NFC tag at the top of the stand. Run the phone past the tag and the apps used in the car are turned on.

One touch magic!

Ava's room

When we bought the house, there is one room we referred to as the 'stupid room' as it was the smallest room, biggest closet, and 2 doors. We set it up as an office and library. Worked great.

With Ava, we decided that the time had come, the office is going away, it's the nursery. We'd discussed the very thing when we bought the house.

So, this had the last of the original carpet. So I replaced the carpet. Katie ordered a wall decal set that I made work with the crib.

Today I hung adjustable shelves so the largest closet in the house can be put to better use. It's a mix of baby stuff and kitchen stuff.

The new carpet is much better. I put down extra padding so it should be extra soft for babies and standing changing diapers.

I really like the decals. It makes the room look nice.

And the closet. With this installed, I am DONE with this room. Only a 6 month project?

Some nasty dirty carpet. I painted the walls before replacing the carpet, knowing I didn’t care about the old stuff.

Did a pretty good job of getting the carpet the right size. Not much left over.

I’d bought carpet laying tools when I bought the house and layed the other carpets. I am 1 extension set short. So I improvised.

I tried braiding my eldest daughter's hair

She was sitting beside me, so the braid runs the 'wrong' way which I think looks pretty interesting. Also, I didn't have a rubber band for the end, so I back-spliced the end.

I was surprised how well this worked. I did a sloppy job of it, and it still held for a while. I think I will need to practice my rope back-splicing on her hair some more.

A few months back, I gave a hand to Layla

Literally. http://bit.ly/hotpinkcyborgbeast

I worked with a couple other volunteers in the evenings for a few months to create a website where people can go to easily create prosthetic hands for kids. Like Layla. This website tool has been called the Hand-O-Matic. Layla's hand was the very first hand to come from this website. http://bit.ly/handomatic Welcome to the future. A future of 3D printers and where 2 measurements and half a dozen clicks and a custom prosthetic hand is created.

Time to finish this quest.

I have given Layla a hand in the literal sense, I have given Layla a hand in the virtual sense by making it easy for her to get the ready-to-print files to make more hands as she grows. Now I am giving Layla a hand by helping her get her own 3D printer.

And I need your help.

November 8th, Layla's real-world community is getting together to finish what a virtual, on-line community started.

We are hosting a fund-raiser benefit to get Layla a 3D printer of her very own. We are going to get a computer that she can use easily with her 1 good hand. We are going to get her the supplies she needs to put new prosthetic hands together. And then this real, local, community is going to give the larger, virtual community a hand as everything above and beyond Layla's needs will be donated to http://enablingthefuture.org/ so we will give other kids a hand – Literally.

So come. Learn about the future. There will be 3d printers there that you can touch and ask questions about. Come, and be a part of a girls future and donate a few bucks – enter the raffle, bid on something in the silent auction.

Come and Give a Hand to Layla.
